Belgium
Belgium is compact enough to make traveling between cities easy, yet varied enough that each stop feels like a different destination. Within a relatively short train ride, you can move from Brussels' grand architecture and cosmopolitan energy to Ghent's canals, Bruges' medieval streets, or Antwerp's more contemporary edge. That contrast is what makes the country especially rewarding to explore beyond a single city.
For a first visit, I'd resist treating Belgium as a quick stop between larger European destinations. Brussels makes a natural starting point, but some of the country's most memorable experiences are found beyond the capital. Ghent surprised me with its balance of history and everyday life, while Bruges delivers the storybook atmosphere it's known for—and the short train connections make it easy to experience several sides of Belgium without overcomplicating your itinerary.
This collection brings together everything I'd recommend for a first trip to Belgium—from deciding which cities deserve your time and planning easy day trips to exploring the canals, cafés, beer, chocolate, and neighborhoods that give each place its character. Use these guides to build a trip that goes beyond Brussels and gives you a better sense of just how much Belgium has to offer.
