Rome

Rome is a city where ancient history and everyday life exist side by side. The Colosseum, Pantheon, and Trevi Fountain may define a first visit, but rooftop aperitivo, neighborhood trattorias, evening walks, and quieter moments away from the crowds are just as much a part of experiencing the city.

The landmarks are worth seeing, but I wouldn't build a trip around a checklist alone. Some of my favorite memories came from the hours between the major sights—an evening in Trastevere, a spritz overlooking the rooftops, or an afternoon at Lake Albano when I was ready for a change of pace.

This collection brings together everything I'd recommend for a first trip to Rome—from building your itinerary and deciding where to eat to finding the best rooftop views and making time for an afternoon beyond the city. Use these guides to plan the essentials while leaving enough room to experience the Rome you find along the way.
